Do you remember this slide from the course intro video? We had two types of estimating, the bottom up estimating and then top down estimating and or planning. Well, in the last video we saw bottom up planning techniques in Primavera P6. In this video, I will show you some of those techniques that can be applied to do top down estimating or top down planning.

Now these techniques are nothing new but they rely on special activity types built into Primavera the WBS summary activity type or the love of level type and these techniques are the same techniques that we use in resourcing as well using those special activity types. So let’s dive in a P6 and see what happens.

Okay, let’s get started looking at some of these top down planning methods for cost loading our schedule in P6. Now the quick review, the way P6 works we are only allowed to assign costs or resources to activities but in top down planning, we want to be able to assign costs and resources to higher level WBS elements. Unfortunately, P6 doesn’t let us sign cost to WBS elements.

On the screen the WBS elements are just the groups and sort bars. They are not really constructs and we are not allowed to assign anything to those bars.
