The Impact of Calendars on CPM Scheduling

Calendars are an essential tool for defining workable and non-workable periods in your project. But they also play a role in the outcome of CPM Scheduling.

And now we're going to be talking about calendars. Calendars are one of those attributes that each activity has to be assigned a calendar. The software has a default calendar. Even if you don't assign a calendar, it will be automatically assigned. Typically in a large construction project you may find certain crews follow different calendars. Not all the crews follow the same calendar so you may have one team that works 5 days a week, another team may work 6 days or even 7 days a week. And sometimes the same team shifts. So, the team works 5 days a week at some point and then there is a crunch time when that same team has to switch to 6 or 7 days a week.

In the computer programs, the computer program can handle the issue of different teams use different calendars, and in the calendars, you have to put holidays. There are recurring holidays and let's say Christmas is on the 25th of December. So, it has to be on the 25th. It can happen on a workday or weekend. And it repeats every year so you can tell the software that this is every year. So, if the project is four, five years, you don't have to go and put it every year. It can repeat itself. And there is also a default or a rule in the software. What if that 25th of December happened to be a Saturday or Sunday? There is an option here to take the nearest workday as a holiday instead of that.
