What is an Event?

An Event is often called a Milestone. Learn what special qualities an event has in construction project management.

Now we've introduced the activity. What is an activity? Let's now introduce the event. What's an event? The event is a point in time that's usually the start or finish of a certain activity. It has no duration.

I usually make an example of...so we can differentiate activities from events. And I tell somebody, the commute from home to work, and they say, of course, yes. And how long does it take, let's say 30 minutes driving to go from home to work. And I said driving from home to work is an activity, right? Yes, it has a duration. It has a start when you leave your home.

It has a finish when you arrive at work. So it is an activity, but the arrival at work is an event. When the boss calls you. Have you arrived at work? Yes or no? While the activity has been three statuses, either hasn't started or started and not yet completed, we call it in progress, or it's completed, the event has only two statuses: not started or complete, those two statuses. And if we use the percent complete, the event has only zero or 100% while the activity can be anywhere in between the zero and 100%.

When we get to the calculations of the critical path method, we will see that each activity has a start date and finish date while the event has only a single date.
