What is Negative Float?

When negative float appears on a project, it's usually undesirable. It indicates a delay but it does not automatically lay blame on the contractor or any other party.

Since we talked about imposed finish date and that resulted in negative float, we need now to define negative float. Negative float is a situation that occurs when performing an activity, even on its early dates, fails to meet the project's imposed finish date or other constraints. Negative float, as the name implies, is an undesirable thing to see or occur. It indicates a delay, but it does not automatically lay the blame on the contractor or any other party.

Negative flow to me is like if you compare scheduling to estimating is like being negative in the budget. And if we say somebody who is flat broke but does not have any loans and somebody who is in debt by $2,000, which one is more critical? Of course, the one with negative balance. And that's why negative float we should not allow it to occur. And if it occurred without responsibility from the contractor has to be explained and the owner has to give an extension. And there are a lot of cases that an extension can be given, but it will be discussed in a different course.

Negative float can happen in two cases.
