Who is a Construction Scheduler?

What skills and experience make for good Construction schedulers? It might not be what you think.

So, we spoke about scheduling, important of scheduling. The term scheduler, and in some parts of the world, they say the planner, but they mean the scheduler. What kind of qualifications, what kind of person he or she is? Is he...and forgive me if I say he, but I mean always he or she, and I say he here as a gender-free term. Is he an engineer or architect? Maybe. Is he a computer whiz?

Well, he needs to be knowledgeable about computers. Is he a mathematician? Well, there are a lot of number crunching and he needs to have this intuition to look at the numbers and say, "That makes sense or that doesn't make sense to me." Is he a project manager or construction manager? Not necessarily, but he needs to be aware of that field. Is he an artist? Well, he needs to be. Is he a communicator? Yes. In fact, he is all of these, could be all of these combined.

How do we...if I'm a construction company and I need to pick somebody, how would I attain confidence? Well, now there is such thing as certification. At least, I'm aware of two organizations, the PMI and the AACE International. They do certification, they have an exam where a person can go through that exam, and if he or she passes that exam, they're certified. The PMI has the PMI-SP, which started in 2008, and I had the privilege to be in the committee that put the questions of the first exam in 2007. And there...
